Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised as an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left college after three year of study and became a teacher's assistant. Following her first gigs performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. In a Roots show she made her debut to be an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. During the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experience performing. She signed as the label's first artist.
